Around the tech world in 80 or more days

Hmm, where to go for spring break? When I travel, I like to go off the beaten path and find things that are interesting or surprising to me. Often these turn out to be things that the natives all know so well they don’t think to mention them to visitors. But that’s exactly what is so great about travel. These are things you have to experience to appreciate. As you notice what is the same and what is different, you often come to appreciate better both the new place and where you came from.

Turns out I’m not really intrigued by another beach or bar scene. I’m more intrigued by the prospect of being a tech tourist, looking forward to enjoying the subtle differences to be found in adjacent industries.

That’s because I’m a native of a small  and slightly weird “country” in the high-tech world: Fiber Optic Communications. It’s a distinct and fiercely independent space located between the large countries of Communications and Semiconductors. Visitors from those spaces tend to find us surprisingly quaint. The words “cottage industry” are frequently heard.

Don’t expect this blog to be the pontifications of an expert. It’s just a travelogue. I’m an industry insider, but my industry is somewhat obscure. Think Crocadile Dundee comes to NY.   My list right now has adjacent areas like IC packaging, sensors, LEDS, as well as the standard tourist must-sees like augmented reality, autonomous driving, and IoT.   Let me know what I should see.
